Does My Child Need to be Vegan or Vegetarian to Attend?

No, we welcome everyone at Overlook Collaborative Preschool! We offer vegan food because it’s a great way to help children eat less processed food. A vegan diet can help us make a smaller impact on the environment around us, even if it’s just for one meal and one snack at school.

Every little choice can add up to making a difference in our world!

What is a Vegan & Vegetarian School?

Overlook Collaborative Preschool is a vegan school, choosing to use only non-animal products.

We offer vegan snacks, side dishes and drinks. Snack options may include items like fruits, vegetables, nuts, bread, crackers and treats made at school.

Parents are asked to provide the main dish for their child for lunch. We ask that this option be one that is vegan or vegetarian. We can warm up lunches for the children. We never warm up food in plastic containers.

Here are some fun and easy main dish ideas:

  • hummus & carrots, bread or chips
  • peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • noodles and sauce
  • tofu, veggies and rice
  • popcorn
  • edamame
  • cheese
  • macaroni and cheese
  • rice and seaweed (wrapped, etc)
  • hard boiled eggs
  • soup
  • burritos
  • meat substitutes
  • cereal
  • yogurt
  • leftovers from last night’s dinner
Organic Foods

We use all organic fruits, vegetables and snacks whenever possible, and strive to provide healthy and filling choices for our children. Teaching healthy eating at an early age can have a huge impact on a child’s eating habits for the rest of their life!

Math and Science Skills

Did you know that when we bake and make snacks the children learn about:

  • counting
  • filling and dumping (spatial relations)
  • measuring
  • fractions
  • cause and effect
  • chemical reactions (why baking soda and vinegar make a cake rise)
  • using deductive reasoning to observe, investigate, and predict
  • reading and following a recipe
  • social interactions, taking turns or offering to help a friend
